The Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey (CPIS)

Portfolio investment across international borders has become increasingly important. This is a reflection of the liberalization of financial markets, financial innovation, and the changing behavior of investors. The increased liberalization of international flows is, however, difficult to measure. The CPIS was conducted in response to global asymmetries in reported balance of payments data, especially those in portfolio investment flows. The survey is annually carried out under auspices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The CPIS provides information on economies' cross-border holdings of portfolio investment securities, that is, equity securities and long- and short-term debt securities that are not part of the balance of payments data categories of direct investment, reserve assets, or financial derivatives.

Countries that participate in the CPIS collect information on portfolio investment assets (specifically cross-border claims mainly in the form of equity and long-term debt securities). The data are then disaggregated by type of instrument (equity and debt securities), with full geographical detail by country of issuer.
The CPIS was first conducted in 1997 and has been improved and more countries have participated since that time. The IMF has created a guide which allows participating countries to standardise the survey to allow a comparison between country data. The guide was last updated in 2002 and is available here.

The survey data is available and can be downloaded from the IMF website:
